In 2023, civil servants in France were absent from work for an average of 12 days, which is only 1.7 days more than their private sector counterparts, who averaged 10.3 days. This marks a significant decrease in the absenteeism gap from 2.8 days in 2022, according to a report by the General Directorate of Administration and Civil Service (DGAFP).
The report highlights that absenteeism decreased in both sectors compared to the previous year, with public sector absenteeism dropping by 2.5 days and private sector absenteeism by 1.4 days. This trend suggests improvements in workplace attendance across the board.
The government has frequently cited higher absenteeism rates among civil servants as a rationale for budget cuts in the civil service, totaling 1.2 billion euros. These cuts include a proposed increase in the waiting period for unpaid sick leave from one day to three days.
