China approves eleven new nuclear reactors in a historic move to lead the global energy sector by 2030. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition from coal dependency.

China is making significant strides in the energy transition by approving the construction of eleven new nuclear reactors, aiming to lead the global nuclear energy sector by 2030. This ambitious initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote renewable energy sources.

With 56 operational reactors, China is already a major player in civil nuclear power, tied with France. The country's aggressive expansion plans include 27 reactors currently under construction, positioning it to surpass the United States and France in nuclear capacity. The approval of these new reactors signifies a record commitment to nuclear energy, with an investment of around $31 billion.

China's energy landscape is heavily reliant on coal, which accounts for 63% of its energy production. The new reactors aim to increase the share of nuclear power, currently at just 5%. As the nation pushes forward, it also explores innovative projects, including a nuclear-powered mega freighter and a collaborative lunar power plant with Russia.
