Wild Thang, an 8-year-old Pekingese, wins the 'World's Ugliest Dog' contest in Petaluma, California, after five attempts. The event celebrates the unique beauty of rescue dogs, promoting adoption and changing perceptions.

The annual 'World's Ugliest Dog' competition, held in Petaluma, California, aims to celebrate the unique and atypical appearances of pets. This year, the 34th edition of the event crowned Wild Thang, an 8-year-old Pekingese, as the winner. With his small size, messy hair, and perpetually hanging tongue, Wild Thang finally clinched the title after five previous attempts, earning his owner a $5,000 prize.

Judge Fiona Ma remarked on Wild Thang's journey, noting that he had been a fan favorite for years. 'It's like being the bridesmaid and never the bride!' she commented. Wild Thang's story is particularly touching as he contracted a virus as a puppy that left him with permanent damage, including underdeveloped teeth and a constantly paddling right front paw.

The competition also highlighted other remarkable dogs. Rome, a 14-year-old pug with mobility challenges, secured second place. Rome's biography reveals his love for tap dancing and his contributions to the community, such as visiting hospice patients and participating in fundraising events. Daisy Mae, another 14-year-old dog, took third place. Abandoned at two years old, Daisy Mae has since lost much of her hair, teeth, and eyesight but has gained friends and confidence.

The event organizers emphasize that the competition is not about making fun of the dogs but celebrating their wonderful characters and showing the world their unique beauty. Many of the participating dogs are rescues, including Ozzie, a 10-year-old terrier mix who visits senior centers and cares for adoptable kittens, and Freddie Mercury, a dog known for his distinctive appearance and presence at children's birthday parties.

Wild Thang's victory is a testament to the resilience and charm of these extraordinary pets. The competition serves as a platform to promote adoption and highlight the beauty in imperfection, encouraging people to adopt rather than buy pets.

  • The competition's goal is to highlight the unique beauty of dogs that may not fit conventional standards. By celebrating these 'ugly' dogs, the event aims to change perceptions and encourage the adoption of pets from shelters.
  • Wild Thang's owner expressed immense joy at finally winning the title after years of coming in second place. The prize money will be used to continue supporting rescue efforts and caring for other pets in need.
  • Rome's owner shared that despite his physical challenges, Rome has a zest for life that is truly inspiring. His participation in the contest and community events showcases the positive impact that rescued pets can have.
  • Daisy Mae's transformation from an abandoned street dog to a beloved pet is a heartwarming story of resilience. Her third-place win is a recognition of her journey and the love she has found in her forever home.
