Cassius, the World's Largest Captive Crocodile, Passes Away at 110
Cassius, the world's largest crocodile in captivity, has died at the age of 110. Measuring 5.48 meters (17 feet) and weighing over a ton, Cassius was recognized by the Guinness Book of Records in 2013 for his impressive size. He lived in the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat on Green Island, Australia, since 1987, where he became a beloved figure among visitors and staff alike.
A Cherished Member of the Sanctuary
The sanctuary announced Cassius's death on November 2, 2024, noting that his health had been declining since mid-October. The founder of the reserve, George Craig, who had a close bond with Cassius for over 37 years, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a heartfelt tribute, the sanctuary stated, "He was not just a crocodile; he was a cherished member of our family and brought joy and friendship to his best friend George."
Legacy and Impact
Cassius was captured in the Northern Territory after causing damage to livestock and boats, leading to his relocation to the sanctuary. His presence not only contributed to the local tourism industry but also raised awareness about crocodile conservation. The sanctuary, which currently houses about 15 crocodiles, will continue to honor Cassius's memory while operating with reduced staffing for the coming days.
