Camila Giorgi Opens Up About Retirement from Tennis
Former Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi has publicly addressed her unexpected retirement, shedding light on the personal and professional challenges that led to her decision. In a recent interview on the program 'Verissimo', Giorgi clarified misconceptions about her abrupt exit from the sport, stating, "I didn't disappear; I had to make an announcement in Paris about my retirement, but it was prematurely revealed on the anti-doping website."
Giorgi, who once ranked as high as number 26 in the world, explained that her decision to retire was not made lightly. "I've wanted to quit for years. The life of a tennis player is tough," she shared. The former top player expressed relief in finally stepping away from the rigorous demands of professional tennis, emphasizing that she is now in a place where she feels happy and fulfilled. "I still enjoy playing tennis for fun, but the constant travel and pressure became too much for me."
Navigating Personal Challenges and Misunderstandings
In addition to her retirement, Giorgi has faced scrutiny regarding her family's involvement in her tax matters. She clarified that her father, who has been her coach, was not responsible for the tax issues that arose. "These problems were due to external people who managed my affairs. I am sorry that my father has been unfairly blamed; he is not a domineering figure but rather very understanding," she explained. This situation has added to the complexity of her departure from the sport.
Giorgi also addressed a controversial investigation involving a doctor accused of issuing fake vaccination certificates. She expressed her shock at being implicated, stating, "I later found out that I hadn't received the vaccine, which was news to me. A hearing is scheduled for November, and I am confident that the truth will come out. I did receive the vaccine and have the certificate to prove it."
A New Chapter Away from the Court
Reflecting on her life post-retirement, Giorgi revealed her desire to spend more time in the United States, where she has lived for several years. "I would like to stay in Miami forever, but I often return to Italy. I prefer not to discuss my personal life too much, which sometimes makes it seem like I'm hiding," she said. Despite the challenges she faced, Giorgi is embracing this new chapter, focusing on her happiness and well-being away from the spotlight of professional sports.
