British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has described the situation in Gaza as devastating, calling for an immediate ceasefire amidst escalating violence. His remarks come ahead of a significant diplomatic visit to Israel alongside French Foreign Minister Stéphane Ségournet. The ministers aim to address the urgent need for peace negotiations in the region, especially following the bombing of Al-Tabaeen School which highlighted the dire conditions for Palestinians. Lammy emphasized that a swift resolution is essential for the long-term stability of both Israelis and Palestinians, as well as the broader Middle East.
As part of their visit, Lammy and Ségournet plan to meet with Israeli officials and will also visit the occupied Palestinian territories, marking the first joint visit by British and French officials in over a decade. They stated that there is no time for delays in reaching a ceasefire agreement, underscoring the critical nature of the ongoing conflict.
Meanwhile, negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict have resumed in Doha, Qatar, with US President Joe Biden indicating that discussions are progressing. The talks involve mediators from Egypt and Qatar, representing Hamas, and are seen as a pivotal opportunity to secure peace. Reports suggest that these negotiations might be the last chance to reach an agreement on Gaza, as military solutions to recover prisoners held by Hamas are deemed impossible.
