Controversy Surrounds Aurore Bergé Amid Allegations of Collusion with Daycare Lobby
In a developing political scandal, Aurore Bergé, former Minister of Solidarity and Families, is facing serious allegations stemming from Victor Castanet's investigative book "Les Ogres." The book accuses her of having made a "non-aggression pact" with the private daycare sector, particularly with the French Federation of Daycare Center Companies (FFEC). On Saturday, Elsa Hervy, the general delegate of FFEC, firmly denied these claims, stating that no pact was ever made. "We have had direct discussions, but I have not made any pact. It will never exist," Hervy emphasized in an interview with Ouest-France.
Green MPs have called for the National Assembly to initiate perjury proceedings against Bergé, asserting that she misled the commission of inquiry regarding her connections with the daycare lobby. They argue that elements in Castanet's book suggest she maintained close ties with private daycare providers, contradicting her previous statements under oath. Bergé's team has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that she acted with honesty and transparency during her tenure.
Investigative Findings Spark Outrage and Legal Threats
The allegations against Bergé are compounded by troubling findings in Castanet's book, which highlights cases of mistreatment and the unethical practices of certain daycare groups, particularly People and Baby. The book claims that this organization falsified attendance records to secure funds from the family allowance system. In response, Hervy clarified that People and Baby has not been a member of FFEC since 2011 and condemned the actions described in the book.
In light of the controversy, Bergé's entourage announced plans to file a defamation lawsuit against Castanet, asserting that the claims made in "Les Ogres" are unfounded and damaging. As the political fallout continues, the situation raises significant questions about the relationship between government officials and private daycare operators, as well as the integrity of the legislative process regarding childcare policies.
