French rugby star Antoine Dupont takes a bold stand against homophobia in sports, gracing the cover of Têtu magazine and promoting inclusivity ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Antoine Dupont Takes Stand Against Homophobia in Rugby

Antoine Dupont, the celebrated captain of the French XV rugby team, is making headlines for his bold stance against homophobia. Dupont graces the cover of Têtu magazine, a well-known French publication addressing LGBTQ issues, in its upcoming edition set to be released on Wednesday, June 19. This move follows his previous appearance in January 2022, where he posed in a yellow Balenciaga bathrobe for GQ magazine. This time, Dupont's determined face is accompanied by the powerful message: 'Neither taboo, nor shame.'

In an extensive ten-page feature inside Têtu, Dupont discusses his aspirations for a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he will compete with the French rugby sevens team. More importantly, he addresses his commitment to fighting homophobia within the sport. Citing the example of Jérémy Clamy-Edroux, the only openly gay professional rugby player in France, Dupont expresses suspicion that he is not the only one: 'I very much doubt that there is only one gay on the pitch!'

Dupont emphasizes the importance of creating an inclusive environment where all players feel comfortable with their sexuality. 'Even if rugby can be seen as macho, we are very open-minded, and today I think we are all capable of accepting each other's sexual orientations,' states the 27-year-old, who is also an ambassador for Louis Vuitton. 'So we really have to repeat it, communicate about it, so that everyone definitely feels at ease.'

Dupont's advocacy echoes previous statements made by football star Antoine Griezmann. The French football team’s attacking midfielder appeared on the cover of Têtu in May 2019, stating, 'Homophobia is not an opinion, but an offense.' During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Griezmann reiterated his unwavering support for the LGBTQ community, though homosexuality is illegal in the host country.

Dupont's stand shows a growing trend among top athletes to use their platforms to promote inclusivity and equality in sports. With prominent figures like Dupont and Griezmann leading the charge, the message is clear: Homophobia has no place in sports or society.

  • Têtu magazine is widely recognized in France for its dedication to addressing LGBTQ issues, making Dupont's appearance on its cover highly significant. The publication's decision to feature Dupont reflects his status as a key figure in both sports and broader social issues.
  • Dupont’s effort to combat homophobia aligns with a larger movement in sports to foster acceptance and inclusivity. Notable organizations within the rugby community have also started implementing educational programs and campaigns to address discrimination based on sexual orientation.
  • The acceptance and promotion of diversity are becoming integral parts of rugby culture, thanks to advocates like Dupont and the increasing visibility of LGBTQ issues in sports media. This shift is essential for ensuring a supportive atmosphere for current and future athletes.
