Amnesty International Calls for Freedom of Expression in Tunisia
Amnesty International has issued a strong statement urging Tunisian authorities to uphold the right to freedom of expression as the country approaches the presidential elections scheduled for October 6, 2024. The organization has raised alarms about the increasing repression of fundamental freedoms, highlighting arbitrary arrests of opposition politicians, the marginalization of candidates, and violations of judicial decisions.
The statement from Amnesty International emphasizes that the use of criminal charges to silence dissenting voices is a growing concern. The media and non-governmental organizations face strict restrictions, which serve to stifle opposition and instill fear among critics of the regime. The organization specifically condemned the Independent High Authority for Elections for ignoring judicial rulings that reinstated certain presidential candidates, undermining the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.
Arrests and Detention of Opposition Figures
On September 1, 2024, the Tunisian authorities arrested presidential candidate Ayachi Zemal under questionable circumstances, despite a judicial order for his release. He, along with other opposition figures, faces pretrial detention and has been barred from participating in the elections. This crackdown has extended to the Ennahda political movement, where approximately 100 members were arrested in a matter of days, with reports indicating that they were denied access to legal counsel for 48 hours.
Amnesty International has expressed deep concern regarding the rights of detainees, calling for the respect of their legal rights and the assurance of a fair trial process. Transparency about the reasons for these arrests and the conditions under which detainees are held is also a crucial demand from the organization.
Media Restrictions and Political Climate
In addition to targeting opposition figures, the Independent High Authority for Elections has sought to limit independent media coverage by issuing warnings to private radio stations and revoking the accreditation of certain journalists. Amnesty International insists that Tunisian authorities must guarantee the rights of independent media to operate without restrictions.
Since July 2021, Tunisian President Kais Saied has consolidated his power and is now seeking re-election amidst a backdrop of political repression. At least 20 political opponents, including prominent figures like Ennahda leader Rached Ghannouchi and Free Constitutional Party leader Abir Moussi, remain imprisoned on various charges, including alleged conspiracies against state security. As Tunisia approaches a critical election, the international community watches closely, hoping for a return to democratic principles and respect for human rights.
