Although the fossil was initially found in 2014, it underwent analysis that concluded in 2021, with findings published in the journal Gondwana Research.

Paleontologist Rodrigo Tempmüller expressed his excitement about being the first human to touch this ancient specimen. The fossil is part of a little-understood group called selenosaurs, which has sparked significant debate among paleontologists regarding their evolutionary relationship to dinosaurs. These reptiles emerged during the Triassic period, a pivotal era that also saw the rise of dinosaurs, mammals, and various other vertebrates.
