Syrian Opposition Launches 'Deterrence of Aggression' Military Operation

On November 27, 2024, the Syrian armed opposition factions initiated a military operation named 'Deterrence of Aggression' in northwestern Syria, specifically targeting regime forces. This operation marks the first significant breach of the contact lines in Idlib Governorate since the Turkish-Russian ceasefire agreement established in March 2020. The operation was prompted by escalating clashes and shelling in the western Aleppo countryside, where regime forces and Iranian militias were engaged in violent confrontations with the opposition factions, particularly the 'Al-Fath Al-Mubin' group.

The operation's objectives, as outlined by spokesman Hassan Abdul Ghani, include launching a preemptive strike against militia positions, defending civilians from regime threats, facilitating the return of displaced individuals, and eliminating the regime's influence in opposition-controlled areas. Within the first day, the opposition factions successfully captured 32 villages and strategic points, expanding their control over 400 square kilometers across Aleppo and Idlib.

Significant Gains and Casualties Reported

By November 28, the Syrian opposition had gained control of crucial locations, including the headquarters of the 46th Regiment and the strategic town of Khan al-Assal, effectively cutting off the Aleppo-Damascus international road. The operation also led to an attack on Nayrab airport, where Iranian-aligned factions are stationed. Notably, Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander Brigadier General Kioumars Pourhashemi was reported killed during these confrontations.

As of November 29, the opposition forces advanced into the first neighborhoods of Aleppo city, capturing the Scientific Research Center in New Aleppo and positioning themselves just two kilometers from the city center. In response, the Syrian regime announced reinforcements to counter the opposition's advances, claiming to have inflicted heavy losses on the attacking forces. Reports indicate that over 200 Syrian army members were killed, while the opposition suffered more than 100 casualties. The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for further confrontations.
