Forecasters Predict Warm December Across Russia
Meteorologists in Russia are anticipating a December with air temperatures expected to be around or above normal across all regions of the country. Roman Vilfand, the scientific director of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, shared insights in an interview with Interfax, stating that there are no areas forecasted to experience below-normal temperatures this winter month. This unusual warmth is attributed to frequent invasions of Atlantic air masses into the Asian part of Russia, a phenomenon that is rarely observed.
The eastern half of the European part of Russia, including regions such as the Northwestern Federal District and the Volga Federal District, is expected to see a significant increase in average monthly temperatures. In contrast, the remaining European regions, including major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, will experience temperatures around the seasonal norm. In southern and southeastern Siberia, temperatures are also predicted to remain close to normal.
Precipitation Patterns and Weather Conditions
In terms of precipitation, most of the European part of Russia is expected to receive normal amounts, although areas in the south of the Central Federal District may face deficits. Notably, the northern half of Yakutia is also forecasted to experience a lack of snow. Conversely, regions such as the Nenets Autonomous Okrug and parts of the Ural Federal District are predicted to see excess precipitation.
In Moscow, the weather for the weekend of November 30 and December 1 is expected to be influenced by an anticyclone, resulting in clear conditions with temperatures hovering around zero during the day and slightly below freezing at night. However, residents should be cautious of black ice due to melting snow refreezing. The positive temperature anomaly is expected to persist into the first week of December, with light snow anticipated around December 4-5, followed by a potential drop in temperatures later in the month.
